The Money Machine · Episode Seven

I Forgot I Owned Bitcoin for 5 Years

The best investment I ever made, I made by accident — and then I forgot I owned it for five years.

Back in 2015, I bought a few thousand dollars of Bitcoin. At the time it was a strange little thing most serious finance people rolled their eyes at, so I bought a bit, told almost no one, and then genuinely forgot about it. Five years later, in 2020, I remembered. I dug up the wallet — and the few thousand dollars I'd forgotten about had grown into a number that changed the shape of my retirement.

I'd love to tell you it was genius. It wasn't. The only reason it grew is that I forgot to touch it.

Two farmers

Think about two farmers. One digs up his tree every week to check the roots, worried, fussing, replanting. The other plants his tree and walks away for ten years. Guess whose tree is bigger. Bitcoin was my tree, and I was the second farmer entirely by accident — I couldn't tinker with it because I forgot it existed. Every friend of mine who actively traded it over those same five years, timing the tops and bottoms, did worse. Most did far worse. Doing nothing beat every trader I know, because the house always wins, and the house is never you.

Bored is how a saver wins.— the lesson of the forgotten wallet

The toll vs the theft

"But it's so volatile," people say — and it is. It swings hard. Here's the reframe that took me years to earn: that volatility is not the theft. It's the toll you pay at the door. It's loud, it's scary, and historically, for the people who held through the swings, it has paid the toll back many times over.

The dollar losing value every single year to the printing — that's the theft. It's silent, it's certain, and there's no upside coming to make you whole. We've been taught to fear the loud toll and ignore the quiet theft. It should be the other way around.

You were never a trader

So the whole strategy, the one that actually worked, fits in a sentence: buy a piece of the one thing they can't print, and then leave it alone. Twenty-one million, held and not touched. You're not a day-trader trying to outsmart a casino — you never were, and you don't need to be. You're a saver who found the one asset that rewards patience instead of punishing it.

That's the opposite of everything the market wants from you. It wants you anxious and active. The unprintable asset just wants you boring. For a person protecting the savings of a lifetime, boring is the whole edge.

What would "doing nothing" have held for you? The Command Center runs your savings against a simple, no-trading Bitcoin hold — and against what inflation quietly took over the same years.
